BLIP
“The drawing “Blip” by the artist Gimiro depicts the face of the artist’s lover, drawn in a unique style of line drawing. The title of the drawing, “Brief Limited Intermittent Psychotic,” refers to a type of psychosis that the artist has experienced due to their schizotypal mental disorder. The two hands “attacking” the lover symbolize the violence and instability associated with this type of psychosis.
Behind the lover’s face, there are Polaroid pictures that represent the artist’s attempt to hold onto memories amidst the chaos of his mental illness. In the top of the drawing, the artist’s throat and chest are visible through an open shirt, further emphasizing the vulnerability and intimacy of the artwork.
To the right of the lover’s face, there are three boxes with the drawing of the lover in each of them, perhaps representing the artist’s desire to capture the essence of their lover in different ways or at different moments.
However, the eerie presence of the smiling men in the background suggests that the artist may feel as though they are being watched or judged by society because of their mental illness. Overall, the artwork “Blip” portrays the artist’s struggle with their mental health and their attempt to find beauty and meaning in the midst of chaos and fear.“
